There was a time when survival was necessary.
You learn how to read the room before you speak.
You stay guarded because vulnerability felt unsafe.
You keep moving because slowing down meant feeling something you weren’t ready to face.
And truthfully… some of that kept you alive.
But what happens when the season changes—and those same habits start working against you?
That’s where I found myself.
Still reacting like I was in a storm… even though God had already brought me into a place of calm.
Survival Isn’t the Same as Peace
Survival says: Stay alert.
Peace says: You can rest now.
Survival says: Control everything.
Peace says: Trust Me with it.
Survival says: Don’t let your guard down.
Peace says: You’re safe here.
And if we’re honest, letting go of survival feels risky. Because survival made sense in a previous season.
But peace requires something deeper—it requires trust.
The Hard Part: Unlearning
Unlearning is uncomfortable.
It’s realizing that what once protected you is now preventing you.
It’s catching yourself reacting out of habit instead of responding with wisdom.
It’s choosing not to go into defense mode… even when your instincts say you should.
And that takes intentional work.
Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
But consistently.
Scripture That Hit Me Differently
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”
That word keep stood out to me.
God isn’t just offering peace—He’s sustaining it. Holding it in place.
But there’s a condition: trust.
Not control.
Not overthinking.
Not reacting out of past pain.
Trust.
What I’m Learning in This Season
I’m learning that peace doesn’t mean nothing ever goes wrong.
It means I don’t have to respond the same way I used to.
I don’t have to:
- Assume the worst
- Carry everything myself
- Stay in constant defense mode
- Live in a state of emotional tension
God is teaching me how to breathe again… spiritually and mentally.
And that’s different.
A Quiet Realization
Some of us are still living like we’re under attack… when God has already given us a place of covering.
We’ve been delivered, but our habits haven’t caught up yet.
We’ve been brought out, but our mindset is still inside.
That’s why unlearning matters.
Peace Has a New Language
Peace speaks slower.
Peace listens more.
Peace doesn’t rush to react.
Peace trusts God in the silence.
And I’ll be honest… I’m still learning that language.
Some days I get it right.
Some days I don’t.
But I’m growing.
Before You Go
If you’re in a season where things are finally settling… but your mind hasn’t caught up yet, you’re not alone.
Give yourself grace.
Survival was necessary for where you were.
But it’s not required for where God is taking you.
You don’t have to fight every battle anymore.
Some things… you can finally rest from.
