Identity isn’t a reward—it’s a fact in God’s eyes.
Let’s be honest—most of us have spent a good portion of our lives trying to earn something God never asked us to work for: His love. We’ve measured ourselves by accomplishments, status, ministry, titles, relationships, and even spiritual performance. But the truth is much simpler, and far more powerful: belovedness is not earned. It’s given.
Before you ever prayed your first prayer, served your first person, or tried your best to “do better,” God already saw you as His beloved. And that word—beloved—isn’t just sentimental. It’s identity.
We’re Wired to Perform, But God Moves by Grace
Life has conditioned us to think that love is transactional. You perform well, you receive love. You make a mistake, love is withheld. This is how many of us were brought up, how promotions are determined, and unfortunately, how some churches function as well.
But God doesn’t operate by our broken formulas. His love isn’t on a sliding scale. Romans 5:8 says it plainly:
“But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (CSB)
While we were still sinners. Before the apology. Before the change. Before the growth. That’s belovedness. That’s grace.
Belovedness Anchors You
When you don’t understand belovedness, your identity becomes tied to outcomes. You feel good when people approve of you. You feel lost when they don’t. You’re on a high when you achieve, and down when you fail.
But belovedness says: You are who God says you are, whether you feel like it or not.
- When you fall short? Still beloved.
- When you’re overlooked? Still beloved.
- When you succeed? Still beloved.
- When you feel unqualified? Still beloved.
This is the identity that grounds you when everything else changes.
Jesus Heard It Before He Did Anything
One of the most powerful moments in Scripture is when Jesus is baptized. Before He preached a sermon, healed the sick, or went to the cross, the Father’s voice broke through the heavens:
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.” (Matthew 3:17, CSB)
Before Jesus did, He was already beloved. And if the Son of God stood secure in His belovedness, so should we.
Stop Striving. Start Resting.
The danger of not understanding this is that we get trapped on the treadmill of trying to prove to God, and to others, that we’re worthy. But you can’t rest and strive at the same time.
Belovedness invites you to rest.
- Rest in knowing you’re fully loved.
- Rest in knowing you’re fully seen.
- Rest in knowing you’re fully accepted—right now, right here.
Not when you have everything figured out. Not when you feel more spiritual. But today.
You’re Not Working for Identity. You’re Living From It.
The greatest shift in your walk with God happens when you stop trying to earn what He’s already settled. You don’t work for belovedness—you work from it. It’s the foundation, not the prize.
Ephesians 1:4-5 reminds us:
“For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” (CSB)
You were chosen. Before you even existed.
