There’s a certain kind of silence that creeps into your walk with God—not because He stopped speaking, but because something in you stopped listening.
I’ve been there.
I’ve known what it’s like to sit in a church service, surrounded by worship, yet feel nothing. I’ve opened my Bible and felt like I was reading an old newspaper. I’ve prayed prayers out of routine, not relationship. And if I’m being real, I didn’t always know when the apathy crept in—I just woke up one day and realized my fire had cooled.
That’s what spiritual apathy does. It doesn’t show up all at once. It eases in quietly… through distractions, disappointments, or even daily routines. Sometimes it’s burnout. Sometimes it’s grief. Other times, it’s a slow fade from passion to passivity.
But here’s what I’ve learned:
Losing your spiritual spark doesn’t mean you’ve lost your salvation. It means you need to return to your first love.
Revelation 2:4–5 says:
“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” (NIV)
The solution wasn’t more religious activity—it was remembering, repenting, and returning.
So how do you reignite your faith when it feels like the flame’s gone out?
1. Be Honest About Where You Are
Apathy can’t be healed if it’s hidden. God isn’t looking for a polished performance—He wants a heart that’s willing to admit, “Lord, I’m tired. I’ve lost something.” That’s not weakness. That’s the beginning of renewal.
2. Go Back to What Stirred You Before
What drew you close to God in the first place? Was it worship? Journaling? A morning walk? A quiet drive with no music, just reflection? Go back to it. God often speaks again through the same doors where we first heard Him.
3. Disconnect to Reconnect
Sometimes the fire is smothered because we’re too connected to the noise. The scroll, the notifications, the pressure. Silence your surroundings. Even if it’s 10 minutes a day. Give God space again.
4. Ask for Hunger
This one changed everything for me. I stopped asking God for things and started asking Him for desire.
“Lord, make me hungry for You again.”
That’s a prayer He will answer.
5. Surround Yourself with Fire Starters
Find people who are lit. Not just in excitement, but in obedience. People who remind you of who God is when you forget. A conversation with someone on fire can light your own wick again.
I’m still learning that spiritual passion isn’t a personality trait—it’s a pursuit.
Sometimes we expect passion to fall on us like rain, when God’s asking us to dig a well. Sometimes that well is dug with repentance. Other times, with rest. But it always starts with wanting more again.
If your faith has felt dim, you’re not alone. And you’re not disqualified. It’s okay to say, “I’ve lost something.” What’s not okay is staying there.
God’s still speaking. The flame can be rekindled.
And this time, it can burn with deeper purpose.
Keep going.
