Obstacles come in all shapes and sizes—unexpected setbacks, personal struggles, financial difficulties, or even spiritual battles. In the moment, they can feel like walls too high to climb or burdens too heavy to bear. The Bible doesn’t shy away from the reality of hardship, but it offers wisdom on how to navigate the emotions that come with it.
A Personal Reflection
Today, I experienced one of those moments when faith and fear meet. It was one of those days when you live the stories we talk about. I wish I could say everything turned out great, but I am still waiting to see how the Lord will work things out. That’s the reason for this blog post. These obstacles are necessary. They shape us, stretch us, and remind us that our dependence is on God, not our circumstances.
1. The Weight of Fear and Anxiety
When obstacles arise, fear is often the first response. We fear failure, rejection, or the unknown. It can feel like we’re walking into a storm without an umbrella.
What the Bible Says:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Reflection:
God doesn’t promise a life without obstacles, but He does promise His presence through them. When fear rises, He reminds us that He is near, ready to give peace that doesn’t always make sense but always sustains.
2. Hopelessness and Doubt
Sometimes, obstacles feel like dead ends. You pray, you push, and yet nothing seems to change. Doubt creeps in, making you wonder if God even sees what you’re going through.
What the Bible Says:
“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” — Psalm 42:11 (NIV)
“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’” — Mark 9:24 (NIV)
Reflection:
Even faithful people wrestle with doubt. But God doesn’t push us away for questioning—He draws us closer. He invites us to bring our unbelief to Him, trusting that even when we don’t see a way, He is still working.
3. Weakness and Exhaustion
There are moments when an obstacle drains you, leaving you physically and emotionally exhausted. You’ve done all you can, but it’s still not enough.
What the Bible Says:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” — Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
Reflection:
God doesn’t expect us to carry everything on our own. He invites us to rest in Him—not just physically, but spiritually. When we lean on Him, He renews our strength.
4. Frustration and Impatience
Some obstacles seem to linger longer than we’d like. We pray for an open door, but instead, we get a waiting period. Frustration builds, and patience runs thin.
What the Bible Says:
“Because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:3-4 (NIV)
“The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.” — Ecclesiastes 7:8 (NIV)
Reflection:
Patience isn’t easy, but it shapes us. Sometimes, the obstacle isn’t just about what’s in front of us—it’s about what God is doing inside us. Growth takes time.
5. Feeling Alone or Forsaken
When facing an obstacle, it’s easy to feel like no one understands or cares. The weight of loneliness can make struggles even heavier.
What the Bible Says:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Reflection:
You may feel alone, but you’re never truly alone. God is near, even in the moments when His presence feels distant.
6. The Turning Point: Trusting God Through the Obstacle
There comes a moment when we stop seeing the obstacle as the end and start seeing it as part of the journey.
What the Bible Says:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (NIV)
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” — 2 Corinthians 4:17 (NIV)
Reflection:
God doesn’t waste anything—not even our struggles. What feels like a roadblock today may be the very thing God uses to redirect us toward something greater.
Final Thoughts
Obstacles will come, and when they do, they will bring emotions with them. Fear, doubt, frustration, and exhaustion are real, but so is God’s promise to see us through.
Today was one of those days when I had to live out everything I’m writing about. I don’t have the answers yet, but I know God is working. If you’re facing something that feels overwhelming, hold onto His words. Trust that He is making a way, even if you can’t see it yet. The obstacle isn’t the end of your story—it’s just part of the journey toward something greater.
What’s an obstacle you’re facing today? How can you shift your perspective to see God at work in the middle of it?
