Acts 16:31 (NIV): “They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.'”
In the heart of Acts 16:25-34, we find a Roman jailer on the brink of despair, prepared to end his life after witnessing the prison doors flung open by a violent earthquake. Yet, in his moment of fear and hopelessness, Paul and Silas offer him a life-changing truth: Believe.
The Greek word used here for “believe” is πίστευσον (pisteuson), pronounced pis-tyoo-son. This word isn’t about mere acknowledgment or intellectual agreement—it demands active, personal trust and wholehearted commitment. It calls for more than recognizing Jesus as Lord; it requires surrendering control and fully placing our faith in Him.
The Power of Belief
Belief is transformative. For the Philippian jailer, belief in Jesus didn’t just spare his life—it radically changed it. In a matter of moments, he went from a man governed by fear and duty to one filled with joy and purpose. This transformation wasn’t limited to him alone; it extended to his entire household.
