Forgiveness is often misunderstood. From a distance, it can seem easy, like watching someone hold a plank position during a workout—effortless until you try it yourself. Once you’re in the thick of it, you quickly realize how challenging it is to maintain. Forgiveness, especially forgiving yourself, requires courage, vulnerability, and intentional effort.
Personally, I’ve struggled with forgiving myself. Mistakes from my past have weighed heavily on my heart, and letting go of those burdens hasn’t come naturally. But I’m learning. Forgiveness is a process, not a one-time event. I’m grateful for the patience of others, as well as the grace God extends to me daily. Scripture reminds us that forgiveness is essential—not only for others but also for ourselves.
One verse that stands out to me is Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV):
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
This passage emphasizes the significance of forgiving others, but it also suggests the transformative essence of forgiveness. It’s not merely about absolving someone else of blame; it’s about liberating yourself from the confines of resentment and guilt.
Forgiveness Starts With You
Forgiveness starts with a choice. Whether it’s forgiving yourself or others, it’s a deliberate decision to let go of pain, anger, or guilt. It doesn’t mean condoning bad behavior or forgetting what happened, but it does mean choosing not to allow the past to dictate your future.
If you’re struggling to forgive yourself, take small steps. Reflect on God’s grace. He forgives us repeatedly, knowing our imperfections. Learn to extend that same grace to yourself.
Forgiveness may feel like holding a plank—challenging at first—but with practice, it transforms into a strength that changes your life. Letting go isn’t only about the person you’re forgiving; it’s about discovering the freedom you deserve to move forward.
