“The tongue has the power of life and death…” (Proverbs 18:21, NIV)
We’ve all been there—saying what we felt in the heat of a moment, only to wish we could hit rewind. The tongue moves fast when emotions are high. But wisdom? Wisdom slows us down long enough to ask, “Is this building up, or tearing down?”
The Bible doesn’t take lightly the weight of our words. Proverbs 18:21 doesn’t say the tongue has influence. It says power. Life and death. That’s serious. That means what we say can revive hope—or stifle it. Speak peace—or incite a war.
Too often, we confuse truth with volume. We think that because we “felt it,” we should “say it.” But wisdom teaches us that timing matters. Tone matters. Intention matters. Sometimes, silence is the wisdom. Sometimes, restraint is more godly than rebuttal.
Jesus knew how to speak to storms—and how to remain silent before his accusers. Both were power. Both were truth. And both stemmed from a heart that was aligned with God, not merely driven by emotion.
