Those moments when your own words don’t match what your spirit needs to say.
Sometimes life takes you into places where English… just isn’t enough. Where the vocabulary you’ve mastered can’t carry the weight of what you’re feeling — or the joy you’re trying to release. And it’s in those places—those wordless, breathless, overwhelmed places—that the Holy Spirit steps in with what Scripture calls “groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26, NLT).
Not everyone talks about this. But if you’ve ever prayed until the tears turned into sound, and the sound turned into something you couldn’t explain… you know.
And it doesn’t just happen in sorrow.
Sometimes joy runs so deep that your spirit starts speaking a language your mouth can’t shape fast enough.
There have always been unknown tongues.
There have always been those moments when your spirit carries something bigger than human language—whether it’s heartbreak or breakthrough, pain or praise. Times when the language of heaven interrupts the language of earth because your soul needs to say something your mind can’t translate.
I’ve lived that. In sadness and in celebration.
I’ve prayed until the ache felt too heavy for words.
And I’ve praised until joy felt too full for sentences.
In both places, the Spirit stepped in.
Tongues isn’t just about the sound.
It’s about the surrender.
It’s the Spirit saying, “You’re not praying this alone.”
And in joyful moments, it’s the Spirit saying, “Let me help you praise God the way your heart feels it.”
Unknown tongues are the reminder that God is not limited to your grammar, your emotional bandwidth, or your understanding. When your mouth reaches its limit, the Spirit keeps going.
So whether you’re praying through something heavy…
or praising through something beautiful…
Sometimes the breakthrough doesn’t come in the words you understand.
Sometimes it comes in the sound you can’t explain.
And that’s okay.
Because God understands every syllable—spoken and unspoken, heavy and happy.
There has always been unknown tongues…
and He has always heard them clearly.
