“My Father is still working, and I am working also.”John 5:17 (CSB)

Some of the most important work God does in our lives happens where we can’t see it.

That’s hard for us because we live in a world that celebrates visible progress. We like before-and-after pictures, milestone announcements, promotions, and finished products. We want evidence that something is happening.

But God isn’t always working where your eyes are looking.

Sometimes He’s working underneath the surface.

A builder doesn’t begin with paint. An architect doesn’t start with decorations. Before anyone notices the beauty of a building, there are weeks or months of excavation, measuring, pouring foundations, and reinforcing structures that no one applauds.

The hidden work determines whether the visible work will last.

That’s often how God works with us.

Jesus made an interesting statement in John 5:17:

“My Father is still working, and I am working also.” (CSB)

Notice the tense.

He didn’t say God worked.

He said God is still working.

That means even when you don’t feel movement…
Even when your prayers seem unanswered…
Even when opportunities haven’t appeared…

God hasn’t stopped building.

He’s still working.

Sometimes the construction is happening inside of you before it ever happens around you.

Maybe He’s building patience.

Maybe He’s strengthening your character.

Maybe He’s removing pride before He gives you influence.

Maybe He’s teaching you to trust Him without visible evidence.

Those things don’t make headlines.

But they’re the foundation.

One reason construction sites often look messy is because they’re unfinished.

Steel beams stick out.

Concrete is exposed.

Temporary walls go up.

If you judged the project halfway through, you’d probably think something had gone terribly wrong.

Yet the builder already knows what the finished structure will become.

Isn’t that how life often feels?

You see unfinished dreams.

God sees completed purpose.

You see delay.

God sees preparation.

You see silence.

God hears every prayer while continuing His work behind the scenes.

Think about Joseph.

For years, it looked as though God had forgotten him. A pit, slavery, false accusations, and prison didn’t resemble a promise.

But every difficult season was quietly building the man who could one day lead a nation.

Think about David.

He was anointed king long before he ever wore a crown. Between the oil on his head and the crown on his head were years of caves, battles, disappointments, and waiting.

God wasn’t wasting the time.

He was building the king.

Even Jesus spent roughly thirty years in relative obscurity before three years of public ministry.

If the Son of God experienced hidden preparation, why should we assume ours is unnecessary?

Researchers often refer to the “iceberg effect.” Nearly 90% of an iceberg’s mass remains beneath the water’s surface. What people see is only a fraction of what actually supports it.

The same is true of enduring faith.

Most spiritual growth happens where no one else can see it.

Private prayers.

Quiet obedience.

Hidden forgiveness.

Small acts of faith.

Those unseen moments become the strength that carries visible victories later.

So if life feels quiet right now…

Don’t mistake quiet for inactivity.

Don’t confuse waiting with abandonment.

And don’t assume that because you can’t see progress, God has stopped working.

He hasn’t.

The Builder is still on the job.

And when His work becomes visible, you’ll realize He was accomplishing far more than you ever imagined.

Keep trusting.

Keep praying.

Keep showing up.

God is still building what you can’t yet see.

Prayer

Father, thank You for working even when I cannot see it. Help me trust Your process more than my timeline. Strengthen my faith during seasons that feel quiet, and remind me that hidden work is never wasted in Your hands. Build in me what is necessary so I can carry what You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
